Roof Waterproofing
1. Flat / Reinforced Concrete (RC) Roof
2. Tile / Pitch Roof
Using a 5-Coat waterproofing System for a Flat RC Roof.
Waterproofing a flat roof using a 5-coat system involves applying multiple layers of waterproofing material to ensure a durable, water-resistant seal. This method typically includes a combination of primers, base coats, reinforcement layers, and topcoats.
1. Surface Preparation
Proper surface preparation is crucial for the adhesion of waterproofing materials. The surface must be clean, dry, and free of contaminants.
2. Primer Coat
The primer coat ensures proper adhesion of the subsequent waterproofing layers to the roof substrate. It also helps to seal the surface and create a smooth base.
3. First Waterproofing Membrane layer
This layer acts as the primary barrier against water infiltration. It’s flexible and can bridge small cracks and gaps in the substrate.
4. Reinforcement Fabric Layer
The reinforcement fabric enhances the strength and durability of the waterproofing system. It provides additional tensile strength and helps prevent cracking.
5. Second Waterproofing Membrane Layer
This layer further waterproofs the roof and embeds the reinforcement fabric within the waterproofing system, creating a robust barrier.
6. Third Waterproofing Membrane Layer
Adding a third layer increases the thickness and durability of the waterproofing system, providing extra protection against water ingress.
Pitched Tile Roof using Flasing
Waterproofing a pitched roof using flashing involves a series of steps to ensure that water is diverted away from the roof and into the gutters, preventing leaks and water damage.
1.Preparation
Inspect the roof for any damage or leaks that need repair before installing the flashing. Remove any debris, dirt, or old sealant where the flashing will be installed to ensure a clean surface for adhesion.
2. Measuring and Cutting Flashing
Measure the length and width of the areas where flashing will be installed
Use tin snips to cut the flashing to the required size. Ensure the flashing pieces overlap each other by at least 8cm to prevent water penetration.
3. Install Valley Flashing
Lay the Flashing by placing it in the roof valley, ensuring it sits flat against the roof deck.
Secure the Flashing by nailing the flashing into place at the edges, spacing each nails about 30cm apart. Be careful not to nail too close to the center where water will flow.
Seal the Edges by apply roofing cement or sealant along the edges of the flashing to create a watertight seal.
4. Installing Step Flashing (for Sidewalls)
Start by laying the first row of shingles up to the sidewall and place the first piece of step flashing on top of the shingle, against the sidewall, and nail it into place. The flashing should extend up the sidewall and out over the shingle.
Lay the next row of shingles and place the next piece of step flashing overlapping the first piece. Repeat this process, alternating shingles and flashing pieces, ensuring each piece of flashing is partially covered by the shingle above it.
5. Final Sealing and Inspection
Inspect all seams and overlaps to ensure they are properly sealed and watertight.
Apply Additional Sealant if necessary.
Conduct a thorough inspection of the flashing installation to ensure it covers all potential leak points and directs water away from the roof effectively.
Bathroom/Toilet Waterproofing
Waterproofing a toilet (bathroom) is crucial to prevent water damage and mold growth. There are several types of waterproofing methods that can be used, each with its own specific applications and benefits.
